Welcome to Shanghai Travel Tips!
Hello and welcome! I’m Ke Ping, your local Shanghai guide and the voice behind this blog. Born and raised in this mesmerizing city, I’ve watched it transform while holding onto its unique charm. But beyond the glittering skylines and classic guidebook attractions lies a deeper, more authentic Shanghai waiting to be discovered.
That’s exactly why I started this blog.
My Story: From Showing Friends Around to Building This Blog
A few years ago, a group of my foreign friends visited. Like most tourists, they had the official guidebooks. But I quickly realized the most magical parts of Shanghai—the sizzling street food stalls hidden in alleyways, the serene morning vibe of a local park, the skilled tailor in an old longtang (lane) who crafts beautiful dresses—were almost impossible for them to find on their own.
The “real” Shanghai was a secret, reserved for those in the know. I wanted to change that.
So, I decided to share my experiences and passion for my hometown. This blog is my personal invitation to you to look beyond the tourist brochures and experience Shanghai through the eyes of a local.
Why Trust My Advice? Your Local Advantage
As a born-and-bred Shanghainese who has been playing “tour guide” for international friends for over a decade, I bring you a unique blend of insider knowledge and cross-cultural understanding.
Here’s what you can expect from my tips:
The Real Deal on Food & Culture: I don’t just list popular spots. I’ll tell you which shengjian (pan-fried pork buns) shop is a legend among locals and why. I’ll guide you through a local wet market and explain the ingredients.

“Survival” Skills Made Easy: Navigating a cashless society can be daunting. I’m an expert in using Alipay and WeChat Pay and will provide clear, step-by-step guides to help you pay, order food, and hail a taxi with just your phone.
Smart Itineraries That Save You Time: I’m an expert at crafting routes that help you escape the crowds and discover the city’s true rhythm. Explore the charming, quiet former French Concession in the morning and hit up a trendy rooftop bar in the evening—all without the stress.

Tried, Tested, and Trusted: My core promise to you is simple: I only recommend places I have personally been to and experiences I genuinely love. Every piece of advice on this blog is built on firsthand knowledge and a commitment to authenticity.
A Moment That Made It All Worthwhile
One of my most cherished memories was when a reader, Sarah, used one of my older posts to find a tiny, family-run tailor shop in a historic lane. She wanted her newly purchased qipao (a traditional Chinese dress) altered. She succeeded and sent me a photo of herself, beaming with joy in her perfectly fitted dress, with the kind, old tailor grandfather standing beside her.
That photo reminded me why I do this. It’s not just about providing information; it’s about helping you create your own unforgettable Shanghai stories.
Let’s Explore Shanghai Together
This blog is a continuous conversation. I am dedicated to providing you with deep cultural insights and practical “survival” tips that go far beyond a simple list of attractions.
